An Open Letter to Our A One-Room Schoolhouse Community

Today, we open the doors and begin another school year.

There is something special about this day. The classrooms are ready, the books are waiting, and the spaces we have worked so hard to prepare will soon be filled with children—learning, laughing, asking questions, making friends, and growing. After months of planning and preparation, we finally get to begin the part that matters most: the journey with our students.

This year, our classrooms will be known as Meadows, Rivers, Ridges, and Summits. These names represent more than different stages of learning. They remind us that every child is on a journey, and every journey looks a little different.

In the Meadow, our youngest learners are building foundations and discovering the joy of learning. Along the River, students are strengthening their skills and growing in confidence. At the Ridge, students are developing greater independence and taking ownership of their learning. And at the Summit, our oldest students are pursuing mastery and preparing for what comes next.

No matter where our students begin this year, they need people willing to walk alongside them.

As we begin, I want to encourage all of us—teachers, parents, and students—to be intentional about the community we create. Choose kindness. Choose encouragement. Choose grace. Welcome the new family. Include the child who is still finding their place. Give one another the benefit of the doubt. Celebrate each other’s successes, and when someone has a difficult day, be the person who makes it a little easier.

We will not have a perfect year. No school community does. There will be challenges, mistakes, unexpected circumstances, and days when things don’t go as planned. But I hope that through all of it, our children will see a community that responds with patience, humility, forgiveness, and love.

Most of all, I pray that A One-Room Schoolhouse continues to be a place where children are known, valued, challenged, and loved. A place where teachers can teach with purpose, parents feel welcomed and supported, and students are encouraged to become not only capable learners but people of character.

A Prayer for the Year Ahead

Lord, bless our teachers with wisdom, patience, creativity, and strength. Give them eyes to see each child for who they are and the wisdom to know what each child needs.

Bless our students with curious minds and courageous hearts. Help them to work hard, ask good questions, persevere when things are difficult, and recognize the gifts You have given them.

Bless our families with peace, grace, and joy. Help us to support one another, speak words that build each other up, and remember that we are all part of the same community.

And Lord, help us remember that education is a journey. Give us the patience to walk it faithfully, the courage to keep going when the path is difficult, and the gratitude to notice the beautiful moments along the way.

Today, we begin.

Meadows. Rivers. Ridges. Summits.

Different children. Different paths. One schoolhouse community.

The invisible thread that ties it all together: The guide does less, not because the child needs less, but because the child is becoming more.

Every Stage Requires a Different Kind of Guide

If grade level is not the best way to understand a child’s educational journey, then what is?

That is where we left off in the previous chapter, and it naturally leads to the next question. If we are not primarily measuring children by the grade they occupy, how should we think about their educational progress?

At A One-Room Schoolhouse, we have found it more helpful to think about learning as a progression through four distinct learning environments: Meadow, River, Ridge, and Summit. Visitors often assume these are simply creative names for classrooms. They are much more than that. They are reminders that as children grow, both the nature of learning and the role of the teacher must change.

Every stage of development requires a different kind of learner, and therefore a different kind of guide.

The mistake many educational models make is assuming that the teacher’s role should remain essentially the same from kindergarten through graduation. The curriculum changes. The academic expectations become more difficult. The students become older. Yet the relationship between teacher and student often changes very little.

At the Schoolhouse, we believe the opposite should happen.

As children mature, the teacher should gradually step back while the student gradually steps forward. The destination of education has never been simply mastering increasingly difficult academic content. The destination is independence. Our classrooms are intentionally designed to reflect that progression.

That journey begins in the Meadow.

The Meadow: Where Wonder Begins

Imagine taking a group of young children on a hike through a meadow.

No experienced guide would simply point toward the trail and say, “I’ll meet you at the end.” Young children need someone who knows the path. The guide walks at the front while another trusted adult brings up the rear, making sure no one wanders too far behind. Along the way, the guide intentionally slows the pace, stopping to notice the countless wonders that children would otherwise hurry past. A butterfly lands on a flower. An unusual rock catches the sunlight. Tiny insects hide beneath a fallen log. Birdsong echoes through the trees. Questions come one after another, and the guide patiently answers them while asking a few thoughtful questions of their own.

The purpose of the hike is not simply reaching the destination. The purpose is helping children learn how to notice.

The Meadow classroom serves much the same purpose during the primary years of learning. Children are encountering many academic ideas for the first time. Reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, art, and music are not simply subjects to complete. They are entirely new worlds waiting to be explored. At this stage, children benefit from direct instruction, consistent routines, careful modeling, and abundant encouragement. They are learning not only academic skills, but also how to be learners.

This is why the teacher takes such an active role in the Meadow. They demonstrate. They explain. They ask questions. They model good habits. They read aloud. They correct gently. They celebrate discovery. Like the guide leading children through the meadow, they determine the pace of the journey because they know what children are ready to notice next.

Sometimes parents are eager for children to become independent as quickly as possible. While independence is certainly our goal, healthy dependence comes first. No one expects a child to navigate an unfamiliar hiking trail alone. Likewise, we should not expect young learners to independently navigate an unfamiliar world of knowledge before they have first experienced the joy of exploring it alongside a trusted guide.

Wonder always comes before independence.

That is the purpose of the Meadow.

The River: Where Independence Begins to Grow

Eventually, every trail reaches a river.

The role of the guide changes almost immediately.

Imagine taking that same group of children on a guided kayaking trip. The guide cannot place every child in the same kayak and paddle for them. Each child must sit in their own boat. Each child must learn to hold the paddle, steer around obstacles, and read the current for themselves. The guide travels ahead, choosing an appropriate section of river, demonstrating the safest route, and teaching students how to recognize rocks, eddies, and changing currents. The guide remains nearby, offering instruction and encouragement, but every paddle stroke must ultimately come from the learner.

No one learns to kayak by watching someone else paddle.

They learn by paddling.

The River classroom reflects this important transition. During the elementary years, students begin assuming increasing ownership of their education. The teacher remains highly engaged, but the nature of that engagement begins to change. Students are expected to organize their work, manage simple responsibilities, persevere through challenges, and make increasingly thoughtful decisions about their learning.

Perhaps the greatest change taking place during these years is not academic at all.

Motivation begins moving from the outside in.

Young children often work because a trusted adult asks them to. They delight in encouragement, praise, and the approval of those they admire. Those are healthy motivations during the Meadow years. As students grow, however, something deeper must begin developing. They must learn to complete difficult work because they value learning itself. They must discover that perseverance, responsibility, and diligence cannot always depend upon external encouragement. They must gradually become people who choose to paddle, even when the river becomes more challenging.

The current of a thoughtfully designed classroom continues carrying students forward, but they are no longer simply passengers on the journey. They are becoming active participants in it.

The River is where students begin discovering that learning is something they do, not something that is simply done to them.

That lesson will become increasingly important because, eventually, every river reaches the mountains.

The Ridge: Where Character Is Forged

Eventually, every river reaches the mountains.

Anyone who has hiked toward a mountain ridgeline knows this part of the journey feels very different from the gentle walk through a meadow or the steady movement of a river. The trail becomes steeper. Long switchbacks seem to stretch endlessly before you. Loose rocks require careful footing, and large boulders often block the path, forcing you to scramble around—or sometimes directly over—them. There are moments when the climb feels exhausting, and it is tempting to wonder whether the summit is worth the effort.

A good guide remains close during this part of the journey, but they cannot climb the mountain for you. They can point toward the safest route. They can demonstrate where to place your feet. They can encourage you when you are discouraged and wait patiently while you catch your breath. But no guide, no matter how experienced, can take the climb on your behalf. Every step upward must ultimately be taken by the climber.

The Ridge classroom reflects this stage of development remarkably well. The middle school years are often some of the most challenging years of a student’s educational journey. Academic expectations increase, friendships become more complicated, emotions become less predictable, and students begin wrestling with questions of identity, responsibility, and purpose. These are not obstacles that teachers or parents can simply remove. They are an essential part of growing up.

This is also the stage where true independence begins to take shape. Students must learn to manage larger assignments, organize their own time, recover from mistakes, and persevere when learning becomes difficult. They begin discovering that success is rarely the result of talent alone. It is more often the result of discipline, responsibility, and the willingness to continue climbing even when the path becomes steep.

The teacher’s role changes once again during these years. They continue providing direct instruction, answering questions, offering encouragement, and holding students accountable, but they intentionally resist the temptation to solve every problem for the learner. Instead, they coach students through the struggle. They allow productive difficulty to accomplish the work that only productive difficulty can accomplish.

That can be uncomfortable for everyone involved. Parents naturally want to rescue their children. Teachers instinctively want to remove unnecessary frustration. Yet some of the most important lessons children learn cannot be taught through explanation alone. Perseverance must be practiced. Responsibility must be exercised. Confidence is not given; it is earned.

Then, almost without realizing it, students reach the ridgeline. For the first time, they can look back and see how far they have come. The climb that once seemed impossible now becomes part of their story. They begin seeing themselves differently—not simply as students completing assignments, but as young people capable of overcoming difficult things.

The view from the ridge is breathtaking.

But the journey is not yet complete.

The Summit: Where Learning Becomes Their Own

Standing on the ridgeline, hikers often experience a mixture of satisfaction and anticipation. The difficult climb is behind them, but as they lift their eyes, they realize the summit still lies ahead.

The final ascent requires something different once again.

Experienced mountain climbers often rope together before making a summit attempt. The route has already been established. Safety anchors have been placed by those who know the mountain well. An experienced guide climbs alongside them, offering wisdom, encouragement, and security should they lose their footing.

But there is one thing the guide cannot do.

They cannot take the final steps for the climber.

The Summit classroom is built upon that same philosophy. By the high school years, our goal is no longer simply teaching students academic content. Our goal is helping them assume ownership of their own education. External motivation has gradually given way to internal motivation. Responsibility is no longer something imposed by the teacher but something expected of the student. Learning is becoming increasingly self-directed because adulthood requires nothing less.

This is why many Summit students begin spending less time in the classroom than they did in previous years. Some enroll in college courses. Others pursue internships, apprenticeships, vocational training, or meaningful employment connected to their future goals. They are no longer practicing independence; they are living it. The classroom remains an important source of guidance and accountability, but increasingly, learning extends beyond its four walls.

One of my favorite moments each year is watching these students share what they have become. We see them confidently presenting their research during Showcase. We see them mentoring younger students. We see them teaching elective classes, discussing college transcripts, sharing what they have learned through internships, and describing the career paths they are beginning to pursue. They are no longer simply consuming knowledge. They are contributing it.

The teacher has not disappeared from the journey. Quite the opposite. The teacher is still holding the rope. When students stumble—and they will—the teacher provides guidance, encouragement, wisdom, and support. But the climb belongs to the student. The decisions belong to the student. The future belongs to the student.

That has always been the goal.

The purpose of education is not to produce graduates who have successfully completed twelve years of school. It is to prepare young men and women who can think independently, act responsibly, serve faithfully, and continue learning long after they leave the classroom.

Standing on the ridgeline changes your perspective.

Standing on the summit changes the direction of your life.

That is why our classrooms are not named after grade levels.

They are named after the journey.

Chapter One

The first in a series exploring the philosophy behind A One-Room Schoolhouse.

We Measure What We Value

There is one statement I probably make more than any other when talking with parents.

“Grade level is the worst way to measure a child’s success.”

It usually catches people off guard.

Parents naturally assume that grade level is the standard by which we should evaluate academic progress. We’ve all grown up speaking the language of grade levels. Children are described as being “ahead of grade level,” “on grade level,” or “below grade level.” Curriculum is organized by grade. State standards are written by grade. Report cards, standardized testing, and educational conversations all revolve around grade-level expectations.

Because the phrase is so familiar, we rarely stop to ask a simple question.

What exactly is grade level measuring?

The more I’ve reflected on that question throughout my career as a teacher, school psychologist, and now the founder of A One-Room Schoolhouse, the more convinced I have become that grade level is one of the least reliable ways to evaluate a child’s educational success. Not because grade levels are inherently wrong, but because they were never designed to be a true measure of learning in the first place.

If we are going to prepare children well, we must first be honest about what we are measuring. And perhaps more importantly, we must ask whether those measurements reflect what we truly value.

Grade Level Is an Organizational Tool, Not a Standardized Measure

Imagine asking ten educators to define what a fifth grader should know in mathematics.

Their answers would almost certainly differ.

A child considered “on grade level” in one state may not meet the expectations of another. Public schools and private schools often sequence content differently. Curriculum publishers introduce concepts in different orders. Even two teachers using the very same curriculum may emphasize different skills or spend different amounts of time mastering a concept before moving on.

If the definition of grade level changes depending on the state, school, curriculum, or classroom, then grade level is not a standardized measure. It is simply a point of reference within a particular educational system.

That distinction matters.

During my years as a school psychologist, I administered standardized assessments to hundreds of students. Those assessments were carefully developed so that the measuring instrument remained consistent regardless of who administered it or where the child lived. Without consistency, meaningful comparison becomes impossible.

We instinctively understand this principle in nearly every other area of life. A foot measures twelve inches regardless of which ruler you use. A pound weighs the same in every grocery store. A gallon of milk does not become larger simply because you crossed a state line.

Yet in education, we often speak about grade level as though it carries that same consistency.

It doesn’t.

This is not an argument against grade levels themselves. Schools need practical ways to organize students, schedule classes, and develop curriculum. Age-based groupings are a sensible organizational structure.

The mistake is assuming that an organizational structure is also an accurate measure of educational success.

Those are two very different things.

Children Do Not Develop in Straight Lines

Perhaps the greatest lesson children have taught me is that development is wonderfully uneven.

I have worked with students solving Algebra while still receiving explicit instruction in foundational spelling patterns. (If you know me well, you know I can walk you through a calculus problem, but I could use some more instruction in foundational spelling principals!)

I’ve known children who read novels several years above what would traditionally be expected for their age but struggled to organize their thoughts into a well-written paragraph.

I’ve taught students with exceptional scientific reasoning who needed frequent reminders to bring home the correct folder at the end of the day.

I’ve also known children whose greatest strength wasn’t found on an academic assessment at all. They were the students who instinctively noticed when a classmate felt left out, who welcomed the new child without being asked, or who quietly served others long before anyone recognized their kindness.

Which of those children is “on grade level”?

The question itself begins to fall apart.

Human development has never followed a single timeline. Reading develops differently than writing. Mathematical reasoning develops differently than executive functioning. Social maturity develops differently than emotional regulation. Confidence, leadership, perseverance, creativity, and responsibility all mature according to their own unique rhythms.

Children are not spreadsheets with every column advancing at exactly the same rate.

They are human beings.

When we expect every area of development to progress in perfect synchrony simply because a child has reached a particular birthday, we create expectations that neither research nor experience supports.

Progress Matters More Than Placement

One of the reasons families are often drawn to A One-Room Schoolhouse is that we intentionally ask different questions.

Instead of asking whether a child is ahead or behind, we ask whether they are growing.

Are they reading with greater confidence than they were six months ago?

Do they persevere through difficult work more readily than they did last year?

Have they become more independent?

Do they take greater ownership of their learning?

Are they developing stronger habits of responsibility, curiosity, diligence, and kindness?

These questions shift our attention away from comparison and toward progress.

When we change the questions we ask, we change the way we understand success.

A student who needs additional time to master multiplication facts is not failing if they continue making meaningful progress. Likewise, a student who races ahead academically but never develops responsibility, resilience, or integrity has not experienced complete educational success. (Seriously, this is why we explicitly teach these skills in Habits of Learning and Habits of Friendship!)

Growth is rarely uniform, but it should always be intentional.

Education is not about keeping pace with everyone else.

It is about continually becoming more capable than you were yesterday.

Success Is Bigger Than Academics Alone

When parents ask me how their child is doing, they are often expecting an answer centered around academic performance.

Certainly academics matter. Reading well matters. Writing clearly matters. Understanding mathematics matters. These are essential skills that open doors throughout life.

But education has never been solely about academics.

If a student graduates with exceptional grades but lacks perseverance, responsibility, honesty, compassion, or the ability to work well with others, we would rightly recognize that something important has been overlooked.

Likewise, if a child grows in confidence, learns to solve problems independently, develops strong character, serves others faithfully, and acquires the academic knowledge needed for the next stage of life, we have accomplished something far greater than simply completing another grade level.

The goal of education has never been to produce successful fourth graders or eighth graders.

The goal is to prepare faithful, knowledgeable, and character filled adults.

Academics are indispensable, but they are only one part of that larger calling.

A Better Question

Perhaps, then, the problem isn’t that we ask about grade level.

The problem is that we stop there.

Instead of asking, “Is my child on grade level?” perhaps we should ask:

• Is my child growing?
• Is my child becoming more independent?
• Is my child learning to think deeply?
• Is my child developing perseverance when learning becomes difficult?
• Is my child becoming someone who loves truth, serves others, and takes responsibility for their own learning?

Those questions paint a far richer picture of success than any grade-level designation ever could. They remind us that education is not simply about acquiring knowledge, but about forming capable, thoughtful, and responsible people. That conviction lies at the heart of everything we do at A One-Room Schoolhouse.

If grade level is not the best way to understand a child’s educational journey, then what is?

At the Schoolhouse, we have found it more helpful to think about learning as a progression through four learning environments, each designed to cultivate increasing independence, responsibility, and ownership of learning. That’s the philosophy we’ll explore in the next essay.

….Why I Wrote This Series

Six years ago, when A One-Room Schoolhouse consisted of little more than an idea, I wrote my very first blog post.

In it, I shared the story of a fourteen-year-old girl who had already decided she was going to start a school one day. I didn’t know exactly what that school would look like, but I knew what I wanted it to become.

I wanted a place that honored the way children were actually created to learn—a school that recognized their strengths, accommodated their differences, nurtured their character, and partnered with families instead of replacing them.

Over the past six years, that vision has grown into something I never could have imagined.

What began with a handful of students has become a thriving community of hundreds of children, dozens of educators, multiple campuses, and countless families who have entrusted us with one of life’s greatest gifts: the education of their children.

“What Makes the Schoolhouse… the Schoolhouse?”

As we’ve grown, one question has followed me everywhere I go:

“What makes A One-Room Schoolhouse…the Schoolhouse?”

It’s a fair question.

Visitors notice something different when they walk through our doors, but it’s difficult to describe.

They see children of different ages learning together. They notice older students helping younger ones. They observe teachers guiding more than lecturing. They sense joy, purpose, and a calm rhythm that feels unlike many traditional classrooms.

People often call it “the magic.”

The truth is…

There isn’t any magic.

There is philosophy.

More Than Methods

There are deeply held convictions about children, learning, relationships, and the purpose of education.

Every schedule, every classroom routine, every staffing decision, every instructional practice, and every tradition has been shaped by those convictions.

For years, those ideas lived primarily in my head and in the hearts of the leaders who helped build this school.

Recently, we undertook the enormous task of putting them into writing.

The result is our Schoolhouse Implementation Guide—a document used internally to train every Schoolhouse employee and establish a shared standard of excellence across every campus.

It is not a parent handbook.

It is not a policy manual.

It is the document that answers the question:

“What does it mean to teach and lead the Schoolhouse way?”

Why This Series Exists

Because that guide is written for our staff, it is not available publicly.

But I believe the philosophy behind it should be.

This series is my attempt to share those ideas with the families we serve, the educators who inspire us, and anyone who believes education can be something more than moving children from one grade level to the next.

These essays are not intended to convince everyone to educate as we do.

Rather, they are an invitation to think more deeply about childhood, learning, and what it truly means to prepare a young person for a life of purpose.

If they also help explain a little of what people have called the “magic” of the Schoolhouse, then I will consider them well worth writing.
