One such teacher is Mrs. Alison (Ali) Stephens, who brings a deep love of teaching, an impressive background in education, and a heartfelt commitment to her students and their growth.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

From a young age, Ali Stephens knew she wanted to be a teacher. Growing up, she spent countless hours in her mother’s first-grade classroom—playing school, flipping through curriculum books (often Christmas gifts!), and admiring her mother’s passion and leadership. This early exposure planted the seed of inspiration that grew into a full-blown vocation.

That early dream led Ali to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education, followed by a Master’s Degree in Child and Adolescent Developmental Psychology.

A Decade of Diverse Teaching Experience

Ali brings over a decade of experience in education, having taught in a wide variety of settings. Her teaching journey began in a Christian preschool, expanded internationally when she taught English for the Walt Disney Company in Shanghai, China, and most recently focused on special education in both public districts and charter schools.

In addition to her work with younger students, Ali also serves as an online university psychology instructor, allowing her to stay connected to her academic roots while mentoring adult learners.

Life in Greensburg and Personal Interests

Ali lives in Greensburg with her husband of nine years, David, and their three energetic sons. When she’s not in the classroom, she enjoys crafting, reading, exploring new places, spending time outdoors, and checking out new coffee shops—always ready to try something new and learn along the way.

Finding the Perfect Fit at A One-Room Schoolhouse

Ali was first introduced to A One-Room Schoolhouse as a parent researching options for her son’s kindergarten education. After years of observing various educational environments—across different age levels, cultures, and socio-economic settings—she was looking for something more: a school that aligned with her values and goals, both as a parent and an educator.

“After touring the schoolhouse, I knew this was not only the best place for my child to flourish in his learning but also for me to flourish as an educator,” Ali reflects. That decision led her to join the teaching team, and she hasn’t looked back.

Caryn Martin, a mother of three and wife to Joe, lives with her family in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. With a B.S. in Special Education and Early Childhood Education, and a Master’s in Education specializing in Autism from Malone University, Caryn brings a wealth of experience to her teaching. She has worked in public schools in various roles, including classroom teaching and student teacher supervision, as well as serving as a developmentalist in Early Intervention. Her background also includes significant involvement in the homeschool community, as she began homeschooling her own children when her oldest was just five.

At AORSH, Caryn teaches the Middles Class (grades 2-3), Science, Nature Studies, and the “Around the World” extracurricular on Thursdays. She enjoys blending academic learning with hands-on exploration, helping students grow in their curiosity and understanding of the world.

Caryn has always felt a strong calling toward homeschooling, believing it to be the best path for her family’s needs.

Her Journey to A One-Room Schoolhouse

Several years ago, a close friend shared information about A One-Room Schoolhouse (AORSH) with Caryn, along with the simple message: “I think this would be perfect for you and your family. You check all the boxes.” While Caryn agreed at the time, she knew it wasn’t the right moment. However, after continuing to follow AORSH and keeping it in mind, the opportunity arose a few years later when both teaching and student positions became available at the North Campus. With prayer and her husband’s encouragement, Caryn applied, and the rest, as they say, is history. She firmly believes that God’s timing played a significant role in leading her to AORSH, and she’s grateful to be part of such a nurturing and safe environment for her own children.

What Inspired Caryn to Become a Teacher?

Caryn credits her grandfather as a major inspiration in her decision to become a teacher. As a child, she would create and mail math tests to him, which he would complete and send back for her to grade. Seeing those graded tests proudly displayed on his refrigerator fueled Caryn’s passion for teaching from a young age. Her family’s constant encouragement, paired with her belief that teaching was a gift from God, motivated her to follow her calling.

What Does Caryn Love Most About AORSH?

During her interview process at AORSH, a volunteer welcomed Caryn with the words, “Welcome to the family.” At the time, Caryn smiled politely, but now that she’s part of the schoolhouse, she understands how true that statement really is. AORSH is a family—a community of people from different backgrounds who share a common goal. It’s a welcoming, supportive, and inspiring place to be.

Caryn also loves that her children are part of the AORSH community. While it presents some challenges, she appreciates how the school’s philosophy aligns with her family’s needs. Her children love to move, explore, and spend time outdoors, which is central to AORSH’s unique approach.

How Does AORSH Support Caryn’s Teaching Philosophy?

AORSH’s approach to education fits perfectly with Caryn’s philosophy. The schoolhouse encourages teachers to meet students where they are and focus on the whole child—not just their academic achievements. This family-centered environment resonates deeply with Caryn, as she believes the family plays the most crucial role in a child’s life and should be involved in every aspect of their learning journey.

Caryn is also passionate about being the primary guide in her children’s education, and AORSH allows her to embrace that role fully.

Regardless of the weather, students are given the freedom to explore, play, problem-solve, and develop life skills every day. One of the challenges Caryn has faced while teaching at AORSH is the need to make adjustments when something isn’t working. It can be intimidating to admit that things aren’t perfect and to take the step to make changes. However, AORSH’s student- and family-centered approach encourages teachers to problem-solve and try new strategies rather than settling for something that isn’t effective. Caryn feels fortunate to work with a supportive team of teachers who help her navigate challenges and make improvements along the way.

She aims to make learning fun and engaging for her students while continuously finding ways to enhance her teaching methods. Let’s dive into Kelly’s journey, her teaching philosophy, and what makes her an invaluable part of the Schoolhouse community.

Meet Kelly Pettit: From the High Seas to the Classroom

Kelly Pettit has been dedicated to teaching children with autism for over 15 years, starting her career in preschool and early elementary education before transitioning to birth-to-3 early intervention. Her journey took an interesting turn when she worked on Norwegian Cruise Lines, running the children’s program. Originally from Canada, Kelly had planned to attend Teacher’s College, but her passion for working with children with autism led her down a different path.

Kelly’s love for children has been a constant throughout her life. From a young age, kids were part of every job she held. She truly learned to teach while working with preschoolers on the autism spectrum, finding joy in helping them achieve milestones—whether it was learning to talk, use the potty, overcome fears, or play. She hadn’t considered teaching in a traditional classroom setting until her own children began attending the Schoolhouse. After seeing her kids thrive and loving the community, she seized the opportunity to become the K-2 classroom director.

Kelly now teaches a variety of subjects to K-2 students, including ELA, Math, History, Science, Drama, Nature, PE, and Art. Her diverse skill set allows her to bring a broad and dynamic approach to her classroom, catering to different learning styles and interests. For Kelly, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is the kids themselves. She cherishes the opportunity to get to know them, watch them grow, and see their progress academically, socially, and personally. Kelly enjoys teaching the same students for several years, allowing her to build deep connections. She loves the freedom her students have to explore, play in the rain, and be themselves.

When she’s not in the classroom, Kelly enjoys camping, hockey, waterparks, rollercoasters, and embarking on mini adventures with her family.

Discovering the Hybrid Model: A Parent’s Perspective

She and her family had decided to homeschool, and the hybrid model provided the perfect balance. This model provides structure, motivation, and much-needed social and physical breaks, which help students thrive. Kelly loved volunteering in the classroom, seeing the kids’ excitement during discussions, and witnessing her own third grader’s anxiety diminish. students can experience a change of pace from being taught solely by their parents. This experience convinced her of the value of the hybrid model and inspired her to contribute her skills as a teacher.

Kelly appreciates the willingness of Schoolhouse families to engage in conversations and grow together—academically, spiritually, and personally. This supportive environment extends to both the children and their parents, fostering a unique sense of community.

Future Goals

Kelly finds inspiration not only from her students but also from their families. She strives to give her best to help them achieve their fullest potential, motivated by the strong relationships she builds with parents and siblings. Looking ahead, Kelly aims to engage more in play during recess and deepen her understanding of her students as individuals. She is thrilled to see her first class of kindergarteners now in second grade!

Nicole’s journey as a teacher is a story of dedication, adaptability, and a love for creating meaningful learning experiences for her students. Nicole Bull’s Background and Teaching Journey

Nicole Bull holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (K-6) from Grove City College. She began her teaching career in the McGuffey School District as an RTI (Response to Intervention) instructor and a Kindergarten teacher. Alongside her teaching duties, she also coached the boys’ and girls’ varsity tennis teams. Nicole’s love for teaching was evident from the start, and she thrived in the classroom setting.

However, after having her first child, Nicole made the decision to stay home and devote her time to her three children as a full-time mom. While she had never envisioned herself homeschooling, her perspective changed when her oldest daughter completed her first year in a private kindergarten. Nicole felt a strong calling to bring her daughter home and pursue homeschooling for all three of her children. Reflecting on this decision, Nicole shares, “It was the best decision ever. It was a gift to give them a childhood that wasn’t rushed or hurried and one where we could make many memories together.” Nicole has now been homeschooling for nine years, and it has been a rewarding journey for her and her family.

A Natural Calling to Teach

Nicole’s passion for working with children, especially young ones, has always been a driving force in her life. When it came time to choose a career path, teaching felt like a natural fit. She has a creative mind and a focus on details, which she incorporates into her teaching style to make learning fun and engaging. Nicole says, “When I am in a classroom with students, it feels like where I am supposed to be.” Her love for teaching is evident in the way she connects with her students and creates an environment where they feel valued and motivated to learn.

Teaching at A One-Room Schoolhouse

Last year, Nicole taught students across grades K-6 at A One-Room Schoolhouse. This upcoming year, she will be focusing on K-2 students, which aligns perfectly with her love for working with younger children. Nicole’s journey to A One-Room Schoolhouse began through her involvement in the local homeschooling community, where she held a leadership position at a large homeschool co-op. She watched A One-Room Schoolhouse grow from the sidelines and was thrilled to see its unique model flourish in the area.

When life circumstances led her to seek part-time employment, Nicole was excited to hear that A One-Room Schoolhouse was expanding its campus near her area. She expresses her gratitude, saying, “It’s a gift to be paid to teach like I once did in a classroom setting, however, truly partnering with other local homeschoolers who have similar desires and passions as I do.” Nicole is grateful for the opportunity to have her son learning alongside other students while still having the flexibility on non-schoolhouse days to learn in their unique ways and at their own pace.

A Unique and Memorable Classroom Experience

Teaching in a multi-age classroom at A One Room Schoolhouse has been both a challenge and a joy for Nicole. Her classroom is composed of students of varying ages, and her mornings are spent teaching math and language arts concepts at the students’ specific learning levels through small group instruction and center activities. In the afternoons, she teaches science and history to the whole group. While this can be challenging due to the diverse needs and levels of her students, it also leads to some of the sweetest moments as a teacher.

Nicole shares a memorable experience, saying, “When I hear my 6-year-old student pronounce words like ‘bioluminescence’ to answer a science question or a 7-year-old student recite the reasons for the Civil War, including vocabulary that you would only hear in an upper-level elementary classroom at a public school, I see my older students helping and encouraging the youngest students with answers. That kind of shared learning and care for kids of all ages goes far beyond what they are learning about in the specific history or science lesson.” This unique model allows younger students to look up to older students, while the older ones gain responsibility by being role models.

Embracing the Hybrid Model

Nicole is a strong advocate for the hybrid model of A One Room Schoolhouse, especially for her own family. She appreciates the benefits of learning in a structured and traditional setting, yet with the flexibility that traditional homeschooling offers, such as learning alongside mixed ages. The model, which operates 2-3 days a week at the schoolhouse, allows for valuable time at home, where learning can happen in their own unique way. Nicole emphasizes the importance of balance, saying, “I am there as their academic teacher two days of the week, and they get the GIFT of still being their teacher all of the other days. Students benefit from that combined partnership, and so do the parents.”

Hobbies and Interests Beyond the Classroom

Outside of teaching, Nicole has a variety of hobbies and interests that keep her active and engaged. She enjoys playing pickleball, hiking, lifting, paddle-boarding, and whitewater rafting. She also loves visiting local bakeries and restaurants around the city, exploring new flavors, and supporting local businesses. Nicole spends much of her time outdoors with her children, making memories and cheering them on in their sports activities. Being involved in her children’s lives is a priority, and she finds joy in being present for their achievements and experiences.

Looking Forward to New Collaborations and Opportunities

Nicole is excited about the upcoming school year and is looking forward to working with her teaching partner, Sara Sunderlin, a dear friend and fellow homeschooling educator she has known since her own homeschooling journey began. She sees great potential in Mrs. Sunderlin and believes she will be a wonderful addition to the Washington Campus. Nicole aims to encourage Mrs. Sunderlin to view her classroom as an extension of her homeschooling journey and the homeschooling journey of the students she will teach. She expresses her enthusiasm by saying, “This model is such a gift to educators who have turned homeschoolers; it truly is such a wonderful opportunity.”

Nicole is also looking forward to adapting her classroom to meet the needs of her younger students. She considers it a blessing to be involved in some of their earliest memories of learning and school. Her goal is for her students to leave her room feeling loved, accepted, and excited to learn and grow beyond the classroom walls.

Meet Marci Koch: An Educator with a Diverse Background

Marci holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a minor in music (2010) and a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (2020). Her strong educational foundation, combined with her diverse experience, allows her to connect with students of all ages and backgrounds.

Marci Koch brings 11 years of classroom teaching experience to A One-Room Schoolhouse. She has taught 4th grade in public schools and 1st-4th grades in a charter school focused on ability-grouped math. Her teaching experience spans K-12 tutoring in math, reading, and test preparation, as well as teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults and international students. Additionally, Marci has experience as a TA for First-Year Writing courses, focusing on providing dynamic written corrective feedback. She has also taught an Intensive English Program covering speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. Beyond the classroom, Marci has given private cello lessons to children and teenagers and has volunteered extensively in Sunday school classes.

What Inspired Marci to Become a Teacher?

Marci’s inspiration to teach comes from her grandfather, a beloved teacher and principal known for making everyone feel like the most important person in the room. His ability to connect deeply with individuals guides Marci in her teaching philosophy—focusing on each student as a unique person, not just a lesson to be taught. Even though her grandfather passed away before she was born, Marci feels a strong bond with him and is determined to carry on his legacy.

As a child, Marci and her sisters often “played school,” where she naturally assumed the role of the teacher. Her love for sharing knowledge led her to pursue a degree in elementary education, and she continues to find joy in helping students of all ages learn to love the process of learning itself. She believes that God has given us endless things to discover, and every new piece of knowledge only reveals how much more there is to learn.

I haven’t learned that …. YET!

Marci’s classroom is infused with her personal mantra: “I haven’t learned that…YET.” This phrase encourages students to embrace challenges with enthusiasm, knowing that they can learn and grow over time. She has witnessed students cheering each other on and quoting Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens us”), which has become a powerful affirmation in her classroom, starting with a kindergartener and spreading to older students.

Some of Marci’s favorite teaching moments involve outdoor lessons, from building models of ancient Roman roads to reenacting Civil War battles through games. She loves seeing the “light bulb” moments when students grasp a new concept or gain confidence in their abilities.

Marci has seen students gain confidence in various areas, including friendships, problem-solving, reading, and leadership. The hybrid model helps build not just academic skills but also life skills, encouraging students to become confident in their abilities and their faith.

Staying Motivated and Inspired

Marci stays inspired by spending time outdoors, digging into new curriculum ideas, prioritizing her faith and family, and building strong connections with her students. Professional development and collaboration with other educators also keep her energized and passionate about her work.

Goals and Aspirations for the Upcoming School Year

Marci is excited about fostering unity within the Schoolhouse community. She envisions everyone “lifting where we stand,” contributing their best efforts within their roles—whether as teachers, parents, or students—to inspire and support one another.

This year, Marci is particularly excited about teaching a STEM class that will include an introduction to 3D printing. She has been learning about the process herself and is eager to bring this innovative topic to her students. She’s also thrilled to have Mrs. Martin join the team to enhance the electives offered, following the interests of the students.

Hobbies and Interests

When she’s not teaching, Marci enjoys a wide range of hobbies, including house projects (where she’s apprenticed with her husband, recently learning how to wire lights), backpacking, rock climbing, and playing the cello. She currently performs with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic Orchestra and dreams of forming a string quartet again. Marci also loves sailing, paddle boarding, reading historical fiction, fantasy, and biographies, diving into the world of 3D printing, and tackling escape rooms filled with puzzles and riddles.

Marci Koch’s dedication to education, her students, and the AORSH community is evident in her passion for teaching and her commitment to creating a dynamic and supportive learning environment. Her diverse experience and love for learning make her a cherished member of the Schoolhouse family.
