Week one of the Schoolhouse design is in the books. It has been a pretty good week and we were able to get most of the week one Schoolhouse design projects done.
If you are new to this design project, click on over to the first post last week to see the full six week game plan! I can use all the encouragement and accountability I can get!
Every Monday, until this project is done, I will be posting here on the progress we have made on transforming my current playroom and guest room into the perfect one-room schoolhouse! Follow along as we design a schoolhouse!
Week One Report:
Below is the game plan I set out on last week’s blog post. It was a pretty ambitious plan, especially since it involved the movement and spreading on 4.5 TONS of rocks! (That was crazy!)
Week One:
Complete the deck make-over. The area around the deck will get small rocks. It will become a secondary play area for all things trucks, construction, and shady relaxing. Think of something like this, but MUCH larger. Also this week, I will plant flowers in the empty planter. Furthermore, I will start the execution of my deck idea: I will order a slide and ladder that will attach to the deck for a FUN way to get up and down. I am really excited about adding these new play elements to the yard!
Week One Progress:
The area around the deck got 4.5 TONS of rock delivered and spread over the entire area after I removed all the trash, weeds, and other debris. I put landscaping paper over the dirt and then did the best thing I could think of… hired out the movement of the 4.5 tons of rocks.
You see the rocks had been delivered to my driveway. I really hand no concept of what 4.5 tons of rocks was going to look like. Of course, like a new blogger… I did NOT take a picture of the pile. Ugh!
So, you will just have to trust me, it was a huge pile. So I called up my good friend with a hard working teenage boy. I said I would pay him to move the rocks! Since he will be going off to college in the fall, he was more than happy to make a little extra money.
That boy worked so hard! What a champ! He had those rocks moved, spread, and driveway cleaned up in two afternoons. Best money I ever spent!
Next on the list…
Next on the list was to buy some trucks, diggers, and cars for the play areas. Well, Amazon is taking its sweet time getting them to me, so not pictures yet. But here are some links to what I am getting.
I really like this heavy duty truck for moving all the rocks around. I also think this bulldozer will be fun in the rocks. And finally, I think this trencher will be pretty fun.
You also might be wondering what the random PVC pipe is for… those are tunnels! That is why I picked up some of these little trucks for the play area. They will fit great down the PVC tunnels!
My favorite part
After getting the rock area all sorted out, I got to do my favorite part: flowers. It was so much fun to go to the nursery and pick out flowers for the different planting areas. Take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think.
On hold
The last thing on the list was my slide and ladder idea for the side of the deck. We had a guy out to get an idea of cost, materials, and the building process. We did a lot of measuring and I just don’t know if it is going to be possible. The angle might just be too steep to safely accommodate a slide.
It is back to the drawing board on that project. I have not given up on it, but I am going to talk to a few more professionals and get some more ideas. Stay tuned!
Looking Forward
Week Two:
Week two is simple. It’s gonna be paint week! Thank you for all of your input last week of paint color. We have picked colors and I am supper excited!
The trim will stay white (of course) and all of the main walls will be painted “rock crystal“. The blue wall in this picture to the left will be painted “plush purple“. I might even add in one more purple wall, but I need to see the gray paint on the wall first!
I am so excited for paint week! I think it will really change the space and help the Schoolhouse come together. I can’t wait to share the after pictures with you next week when the paint is all done!
