Since The Good and the Beautiful is having an early bird curriculum sale, I thought I would go ahead and order our 2021-2022 science and history picks. I have put a lot of thought into our 2021-2022 science and history picks. Students, field trips, and teachers are all considered. I am so excited to announce our 2021-2022 science and history picks!
So, without further ado… drumroll please… here we go! We will start off with our science picks for the 2021-2022 school year:
2021-2022 Science
Choosing the Science Units
I take lots of time when choosing the science units for A One-Room Schoolhouse. The first thing I looked at was the available units that The Good and the Beautiful has released. Next, I eliminated the ones that we have already done this school year. We will complete or have already completed the Meteorology, Geology, Human Body One, Mammals, and Arthropods units.
During the 2021-2022 school year I wanted to have a good mix of different kinds of sciences while looking to meet the interests and abilities of each of our students. To do this, I surveyed all our current Schoolhouse parents and had them rank the available science units.
Finally, I also wanted to consider available field trip options in our areas that might correspond with these science units. You see, at A One-Room Schoolhouse, we take a monthly field trip. These field trips correspond with either our study in history or our unit in science. Nothing brings about better learning than seeing what you are studying in real life.
Now you may have noticed above that Water in our World and Ecosystems are listed as option one and option two. I do not think I will be able to fit both of those units into the next school year, but you never know, we might do it! I do not know which one I am going to choose. It really depends on time. The Ecosystem unit is a little bit shorter than Water in our World. I will be able to gauge the interest and the time better when we are in the midst of the next school year.
Choosing the History Year
You might think this is a dumb announcement. If you are familiar with The Good and the Beautiful history you know that history years one, two, three, and four are ready for use. Generally, they are taught in sequence, but they can be taught out of order. (You can see the whole history outline here.)
Due to availability, I considered going straight to history year three and then circling back to history year two in the subsequent school year. After much reflection, I decided to go with history year two. The only thing that is currently out of stock is the coursebook and I might look to buy this on the secondary market or just wait to buy it when it restocks, even after the sale is over.
Even if you have not done year one of history, DO NOT WORRY. You can still join us and nothing will be weird or out of sync. You can read all about how history works at A One-Room Schoolhouse here.
I am excited to take a deeper dive into the subjects that are covered in history year two. My favorite period in history is colonial America. Thanks to an amazing fifth-grade teacher and going to graduate school and The College of William and Mary, I cannot wait to teach this unit!
