Teacher Entrepreneur Event

Love teaching but not institutional education? Become an Education Entrepreneur with A One-Room Schoolhouse, a homeschool hybrid academy.

Are you a current teacher, a student pursuing a degree in education or a parent who is dissatisfied with the current school choices in your area? Do you want more creative freedom and think there’s a better way to teach the next generation?

A One-Room Schoolhouse was designed with all of these questions in mind. The schoolhouse’s education director, Genevieve Peterson, has worked in public and private school settings as a teacher and school psychologist for over two decades. She left institutional education to create A One-Room Schoolhouse (headquartered in Hickory, PA) to provide a rich educational environment for her own young children and the nearly 50 students that currently attend. Want to learn more about the schoolhouse story? Read more about how the schoolhouse started and our approach and philosophy.

Due to increasing demand, we are looking for motivated educators to join us in bringing this unique model to more families in western Pennsylvania and the tri-state area. Join us at 7 pm on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Camp Agape in Hickory, PA for an informational session and schoolhouse tour. Keep reading to learn more if this model is the right fit for you!

How is the schoolhouse model different from a public or private school?

A One-Room Schoolhouse is based on a homeschool hybrid academy model. Students attend classes three days a week taught by licensed, professional teachers. Learning on the other two days is facilitated by parents with guidance and oversight by schoolhouse staff. There is a heavy emphasis on Christian values, habit formation, academic excellence and nature-based learning. We use The Good and The Beautiful for academic subjects, SQUILT Music for music exploration and appreciation, Exploring Nature with Children for outdoor education and Habits of Learning/Habits of Friendship for developing godly habits and emotional intelligence. This unique model also facilitates a homeschooling parent community that provides group field trips, elective options and fun social activities. A healthy parent volunteer commitment is also required, which allows parents to participate in their child’s classroom education on a monthly basis and facilitates relationships amongst parents and other students. It’s the best of both worlds – freedom and flexibility that comes with homeschooling and benefits of traditional classroom learning with peers and qualified staff.

Are we a good match? Who should attend the info session?

Due to the skyrocketing amount of enrollment inquiries we have receive on a weekly basis, the schoolhouse is hoping to expand in two ways:

1) By hiring additional teachers at our main campus at Camp Agape in Hickory, PA (in Washington County).

2) By finding education entrepreneurs who have the drive, creativity and desire to reimagine education options in their communities. A One-Room Schoolhouse would provide training, tools, mentorship and the legal umbrella to help satellite campuses succeed. Ideal candidates for these campuses will have an education background, strong networking skills, the drive to build a schoolhouse campus from the ground up and the desire to be at the forefront of educational innovation.

Not a teacher…that’s ok! Maybe you are a parent who wants to start a schoolhouse in your area and you need to find a teacher who is a good fit. Maybe you are a group of parents that wants to find out more about the schoolhouse model. Maybe you are a pastor and you want to use your church building for educational purposes during the week. All are invited to attend!

Meeting details and weather considerations

If you’re still reading and feel drawn to a different kind of educational future for yourself as a teaching professional, for your children or for your community, please plan to join us at 7 pm on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Camp Agape. We strongly encourage you to come in-person. However, if your drive-time exceeds 1.5 hours, we will happily provide you with a zoom link. Please contact us directly for these accommodations. Education entrepreneur events will not be held frequently, so please plan to attend this event if your schedule allows.

We will start the meeting promptly at 7 pm, but you are welcome to start arriving at 6:30 pm if you would like to speak with current staff individually or ask specific questions about your situation.

If the weather is snowy and road conditions are poor, we will make a decision on either a change of location or postponement 24 hours before the meeting. Email notifications will be sent and updates will be posted on the Facebook event page.

Location Details: Getting to Camp Agape

The meeting will be held at Camp Agape’s Retreat and Learning Center, our current schoolhouse classroom space. Camp Agape is located at 72 Agape Road, Hickory, PA 15340. Your GPS will take you to the main entrance of the camp. You will then need to drive down the gravel road through the camp property for about a mile. The Retreat and Learning Center is the first building on the left as you climb to the top of the hill.

The road to the Retreat and Learning Center is gravel, so please keep this in mind after turning off of the main road. As long as the weather holds, you should not experience problems getting to the building.
