I am so thrilled to make this announcement: A One-Room Schoolhouse’s north campus will be accepting a limited amount of applications for students in levels 3-6.
The north campus has had a fabulous first year, and with increasing demand for the program, has decided to open a second classroom.
Apply online here for the 2023-2024 school year. Families will have the opportunity to meet with the classroom teachers, take a tour, complete a parent/child interview and placement testing before fully committing to the program.
Campus Location Details
A One-Room Schoolhouse has partnered with Heritage Presbyterian Church conveniently located at 2262 Rochester Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. While the indoor space has provided an excellent learning environment, the outdoor space has been a huge added bonus for schoolhouse students. Playground equipment, a wooded area and a park across the street provide lots of opportunities for students to enjoy the outdoors during recess and nature study.
North Campus Classroom Director
Marci Koch (pronounced “cook”) taught elementary school for several years, primarily at a charter school focused on ability-leveled math classes and Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids. She holds degrees in Elementary Education and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). She also has experience in teaching and mentoring other teachers in both community and academic settings for adult English language learners.
Marci completed several French classes in college and lived in France and Belgium for a total of nearly two years studying and speaking French.
Marci also volunteers as a music coordinator and youth group teacher at her church and maintains a cello studio where she teaches several students. She enjoys spending time with her husband working on house projects, building furniture, making pottery, paddleboarding, hiking, backpacking, camping and traveling.
She also enjoys reading, taking art classes, playing in the Pittsburgh Philharmonic and spoiling her nieces and nephews with books. Marci is thrilled to join in and support the mission of A One-Room Schoolhouse and partner with parents in the sacred duty of educating their children.
Mrs. Koch will be offering a solid academic structure using The Good and the Beautiful curriculum and a wide variety of electives including art, music appreciation with instrument instruction, French and nature study. These elective classes will be available in a multi-age direct instruction format on Thursday, the elective day at A One-Room Schoolhouse. (Learn more about our schedule here.)
On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, north campus teachers will focus on core subjects to K-6 students in person and support parents in the endeavor of academic instruction. Our north campus will follow the same schedule as the original schoolhouse.
All the schoolhouse teachers, no matter the location, will work together to make sure we bring the highest level of homeschool support to our families. We will continue to draw most of our academic curriculum from The Good and the Beautiful. Stay tuned for another post that outlines which science units and history subjects we will be covering next year.
As far as field trips, end-of-year parties and other major events, our campus locations will coordinate these events together. All locations will follow the same calendar and handbook.
Cost and Commitments
Tuition and fee structures for all schoolhouse campuses will be the same. We work very diligently to keep costs as low as possible so the schoolhouse remains affordable for all of our families.
Also, the volunteer commitment will stay the same, no matter the campus location. Our parents are what make the magic happen at A One-Room Schoolhouse! We could not do this without their dedication and support.
When Can I Apply?
On March 20th, we will start taking outside applications for our North Campus for students in grades three to six (or those students functioning in those grade levels).
If you need to understand the application process, you can check out this post here. I am excited to offer our application to families outside of the interest pool. But, we do have very limited spots at these campuses, and we are looking for students that fit into our existing student body.
To see if a homeschool hybrid educational setting is the best fit for your family, please familiarize yourself with The Good and the Beautiful curriculum, read about our volunteer commitment and learn more about our model.
Watch the Facebook Live meet and greet with Mrs. Koch to get to know more about her background and what her plans are for the North Hills campus. We will also be posting more information about our other newly hired teacher for this campus soon! If you have additional questions, please contact us, and we will get back to you!
